Datablitz Gets Raided Courtesy of XPlay

On November 5, 2012, simultaneous raids led by PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) were held in various branches of game and software distributor Datablitz, Inc., as they were publicly selling NBA 2K13 products without any prior authority and consent from NBA2K13 exclusive distributor in the Philippines, X-Play Online Games, Inc.


To protect their business, X-Play reported Datablitz to authorities for selling copies of NBA 2K13 sourced from other means (not from X-Play) that led to the raid.

XPlay issued a statement at 4:30 pm on November 6, clarifying that its complaint was for "unfair competition" as defined under Section 168 of Republic Act No. 8293 or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

"By selling the NBA2K13 Products without authority from EpicSoft and/or XPlay, the exclusive distributor thereof in the Philippines, Datablitz, Inc. took a 'free ride' on the good will  and marketing excitement established by XPlay, thereby engaging in 'unfair competition' to the prejudice of-Xplay and all of its rightful distributors most of which are small retail outlets," it said.

Raided was the branch of Datablitz at the Robinsons Ermita mall, based on a complaint by XPlay Online Games Inc. the local distributor of NBA 2K13 and other entertainment software products.

The complaint prompted the Makati Regional Trial Court Branch 24 to issue the search warrant.

XPlay: We met with Datablitz

XPlay also said that it was prompted to take legal action against Datablitz because the latter had decided to distribute NBA 2K13 despite the failure of earlier talks between the two companies.

"This is not a knee-jerk reaction from XPlay. In fact, meetings were held with Datablitz President, Winston Lim and his team to become XPlay’s primary partner for NBA 2K13. Datablitz key executives Sandra Lu and Orpha Oambas even participated in XPlay’s distributor conferences and got all the marketing and distribution plans of the company," XPlay said in its statement.

"Datablitz’s decision to acquire and distribute NBA 2K13 through unauthorized means despite these efforts, leaves XPlay no other option but to report this to the proper authorities, in which CIDG and the Regional Trail Court took immediate action on," XPlay added.

GMA News Online has been in constant direct communication with Datablitz, which has declined to comment on XPlay's statement pending the release of its own official stand on the matter.

As of 4:30 pm, Datablitz told GMA News Online that it is still working on its statement.

Meanwhile, the CIDG said that it will issue an official statement on Wednesday morning, November 7.

It is unfortunate that businesses had to be disrupted by the incident that transpired yesterday. While we sympathize with other individuals dragged on by this issue, we stand by our ground to be vigilant in dealing with illegal activities to protect our rights, our partners and our local gaming community.

This is not a knee-jerk reaction from X-Play. In fact, meetings were held with Datablitz President, Winston Lim and his team to become X-Play’s primary partner for NBA 2K13. Datablitz key executives Sandra Lu and Orpha Oambas even participated in X-Play’s distributor conferences and got all the marketing and distribution plans of the company.

Datablitz’s decision to acquire and distribute NBA 2K13 through unauthorized means despite these efforts left X-Play no other option but to report this to the proper authorities, in which CIDG and the Regional Trail Court took immediate action on.

The action of Datablitz was not only detrimental to X-Play but also affected other smaller retailers, game stores and entrepreneurs. We hope nothing more but to resolve this predicament but will hold firm in protecting the industry from smugglers and illegal operators.

'Line Pirates: Bringing High Quality Gaming to Facebook

Kim has the air of a veteran gamer about him and you can hear his passion for fun games in his voice. He was one of the original LPBs in Quake when FPSs were first taking hold. In City of Heroes, he was the infamous scrapper Leprechauna that discovered the "perma-unstoppable" exploit. Acclaimed as a Dungeon Master extraordinaire, he ran the New World Campaign openly online. But Kim is more than just a typical gamer. He's participated in several successful startups, a few in Silicon Valley during the boom. He's worked for most of the national labs and done classified government research. He's a renaissance man with interests ranging from math conjectures to public health... with a shrewd sense of business and future trends.

"Equally important to what we're going to do is how," Kim elaborates. "We're specifically designing a game that appeals to both genders. Women are now the dominant force in tech spending, and pretty soon they're going to lead in gaming, especially social games. Most gaming companies cater to men and are missing half their market because of major errors. They pander to female stereotypes that turn women off and lack gameplay that actually appeals to women. 'Line Pirates has a strong female main character (Ezzy) in a story with compelling characters and an unfolding plot. Our game is inherently social and team-building is an integral part."

"The average age of gamers has grown up, and that has several consequences for gaming. Adults lead busy lives and don't have the ample time they used to. They also have considerably more disposable income than teenagers, and tend to value quality experience and convenience over price. The content dealt with in most games not only can be more mature, there's an increasing expectation of sophistication in games. One direction that has headed is production value: a game like Mass Effect 3 made by a big label is as complicated as a movie, with the same entertainment expectation of their audience. We're heading in the direction of sophistication of strategy and storyline. We have to assume our casual Facebook gamer is using a modest computer system, so computationally intensive elements like high-end rendered graphics can't be relied upon."

"We're also experimenting with funding models," Kim explains. "Rather than seeking traditional venture capital, we've started a Kickstarter project to get seed funding. We're trying to involve our audience right from the get go and give them a say in shaping the 'Line Pirates. Kickstarter is a truly new beast that hasn't fully been explored yet. Not only is it connecting creators and consumers, it's generating self-selected target markets. I hate ads as much of the next guy (there will be no ads or ad revenue in 'Line Pirates) but when I support a Kickstarter project I _want_ to be involved. I want to get updates. Basically, I'm getting a say in directing the marketplace to meet my needs."

"Kickstarter is a compelling example of crowdfunding in action. This same model of connecting peers financially in small amounts is being duplicated successfully over and over. Micro-charities have gained traction, whether they use a loan model like Kiva or donations model like Microgiving. Lending Club, where people loan other people money, gives better returns than the stock market or other investments. At one point these kinds of places were viewed as a curio, but now they are outperforming comparable vehicles and funneling hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Crowdfunding is here to stay, and it's an interesting alternative to the dog and pony show of venture capital."

When asked whether there's anything else special in 'Line Pirates, Kim replies, "Oh my god yes. We've committed to being completely online and never having a print version of the game. That allows us to do interesting powers and effects that wouldn't be possible in other card games, like changing the probability you'll draw a certain type of card. Unlike other card games that evolved over time, we've mathematically balanced the entire game. So we can make, oh, around 2 billion fair cards without disrupting any balance issues. And don't even get me started on our unique UpClose Matchmaking system that accounts for both player rating and deck power, ensuring that every game you play will be close and fun!"

Diablo 3 set to lauch this May

Urban Rivals Now Available on Android

The freemium MMO slash card game slash strategy Urban Rivals has finally received what many were waiting for: an Android version that now basically completes the platforms this game is available on (you can play it on Facebook, iOS or in your browser).

Urban Rivals is a strategy turn-based virtual street brawling game where you collect and strengthen your skills using player cards. Urban Rivals spawned to mobile from the hugely popular web version of the game so you can take the brawl from computer to tablet to smartphone. It takes collectible character cards of various skills, strengths and weaknesses and puts you in a 4-on4 battle against other players in real-time around the world. You first start out in a simulated tutorial of battles to get you acquainted to the game and learn how to fight. It’s all strategy in how you match foes against each other based on their values.

Fortunately and unfortunately some battles are won due to your opponent not responding in the time frame. Also a negative side effect of playing people in the real world is waiting on them.

The mobile app features about half of the full online features so we do encourage you to flip back and forth with each. For example, when you go online you can shop for characters, join or create guilds, use the message boards, and see global leaders.

How to Play Urban Rivals

At random you and your opponent are given four of your characters from your legion collection. You alternate turns, so you are given two minutes to pick a rival and their bonus power such as “Pillz” or “Fury“. You start with twelve Pillz and given each one round as a performance booster for your character. Fury unleashes pure rage with your fighter and will cost you three Pillz. Use these enhancements wisely as you may not have enough in the later rounds to win the battle.

Pay careful attention to your fighter’s skill set denoted as Power, Damage, Ability Unlock level, and Cancel Leader. Note: Pillz are multiplied by the fighter’s power to produce the total Pillz number. Damages are taken from your foe’s health represented by the heart icon. To win the battle you must either end four rounds with the most health or completely annihilate your opponent of all theirs.

After each battle you are given experience known as “XP” that you can use to bump up a weaker character’s experience level, vital in the early rounds. Get enough experience and you can propel them to the max level. You will also want to go into your ‘Collections’ and manage your available player cards.

Other areas to help you advance in the game’s ecosystem are Clintz, Credits and Theme Decks. “Clintz” are the in-game currency you earn by either fighting, gambling with tickets and win, or trading with other players. This currency is used to buy characters from the market. “Credits” can be earned or brought with real cash and used to buy “Theme Decks“, which are a pack of characters you can buy at once to drastically expand and diversify your character collection.

My Personal Strategy Hints

This is my personal strategy that seems to win about 70% of my battles. It still requires you to size up your opponent to see if the overall battle will be competitive. I always choose to fight which will make the other player go first. I also always sacrifice the first round to get the player to bite and use a high amount of Pillz, whereas, I would not add any sticking to the mandatory one. It’s vital that I win the second round, so I choose a character with either the highest power, preferably high power and damage to place 6-7 Pillz. I don’t even bother with Fury as it’s too taxing with not enough benefit. By round three I can judge whether to go all in with Pillz and win the match or if it will go to the forth and I win because I have the most health.

Pros

• Totally addictive strategy game across mobile and web!
• Almost unlimited number of levels, missions and foes to battle!
• Grand online user base so it is always someone to fight!
• Mini game and other incentives to gain bonus currency to buy more characters!
• High replay and longevity value which can offer minutes to hours of fun!

Cons

• Audio keeps playing after you stop the game, forcing a restart just to stop it.
• Although there is a lot of graphic detail, it’s spoiled by improper sizing and screen pixelation. Text is tiny and sometimes difficult to read.
• One of the negative side effects of playing people in real time is waiting on them.

Game of Thrones RPG Trailer, Details Finally Out

We’ve heard lots of rumors, but very little concrete information about the Game of Thrones RPG until today. Cyanide studios released some choice tidbits of information along with a new trailer showing the game in action.


Game of Thrones, the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 RPG due out early 2012, is being built by Cyanide Studio using Epic's Unreal Engine 3, publisher Focus Home Interactive has revealed.

It's based on the series of novels A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin - the inspiration behind the HBO TV series. The game's story is written "under the supervision" of R.R. Martin.

You play as Mors, sworn brother of the Night's Watch, and Alester, a Red Priest in search of redemption. The pair adventure in familiar parts of Westeros, such as the Wall and King's Landing. You get to meet Queen Cersei, Varys the Spider and Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Expect 30 hours of gameplay.

At the beginning of the game you choose the class of your characters and determine their fighting style. As with all good RPGs there's equipment to loot, weapons to find and experience to gain. You can slow down time during combat.



It was hardly the trailer we were hoping for, but it’ll do for now. It’s over two minutes long, but includes next to no gameplay footage. And the footage that does come from in-game play is just a character running in a perfectly straight line in a few different settings. For a game that’s due out in “early 2012” that’s a bit concerning.

Soccer Viva Online Closed Beta Starts on December 20!

The Closed Beta of Soccer Viva Online is almost here now, and here we are announcing the date of the Closed Beta test.

The Closed Beta will begin on Tuesday December 20 th at 02:00 pm (GMT +8). The goal for this initial phase is to test our server architecture and find out if there's any bug in the game. All the data of the closed beta test will not be clear even the closed beta is ended, and will be carrying on to the open beta test.

•  Daily friendly matches --- Exhibition

Exhibition will be the most football matches you will keep in touch in the game, you can see all the other football teams' created by the other players data in the menu, and you should try to challenge them to level up you manager's skill and get your gold as your team's fund, there's will be a limited that you can only challenge with the exhibition 5 times every day.
 

•  To find out your strength level in the world --- Ladder

Ladder is kind seasonal matches calculated with Ladder match scores; every season of ladder match has 4 weeks duration and the Ladder match score will be reset as 1000 points after the season ends. Once you have join the match, the system will help you to select a opponents whose strength is similar to you, and have a match with each others, Any win or lose will cause the increase or deduct of the ladder match score of your football team. You must complete at least 3 ladder matches every day so that the system can calculated the corresponding honor according to the current ladder match scores, and you can try to hire a coach for your team or get the senior cards which are the famous football players with your honor points. Join the Ladder matches always cost you nothing so it is recommend you to join this match as many as you can.
 

•  Get challenge with the big confidence --- Challenge

In the game, if you have a big confidence with your football team, you can create a challenge with condition and challenge fund for all the other managers' team, or try to pay the challenge fund to take the challenge create by the other managers. Although you can only create one challenge each of the time, every team whose meet your challenge condition and take your challenge to win your fund or lose his fund to you. And the challenge room will be shut only if your loss meets your Stop Loss Limit. So it could be a fastest way to find the fund for your team if you have confident that your football team is strong enough.

•  Rule and defend your throne of football --- Arena

Arena is a kind of knockout matches hold on every day; you have to pay for the required fund to join this tournament. If you can win all the 8 rounds of arena matches, you will become LeiZhu who needs to defend your throne of it, and win the 50% voucher award in the award pool, every more players try to challenge the arena will award you the fund until you have been kicked from the throne. Only the top kind of teams will be choose to join this big event of the game. The match is very likely to the reality World Cup, winning the World Cup or being top 8 of the world cup won't let you earn any fund, but a more valuable award --- the legend football players like Gullit, Van Basten, Rijkaard…etc. So try hard to strength up your team and aim to be the top of the top!

•  Football style of the manager --- Talent Tree
