Goodbye Dragonica PH, Hello Dragonica SEA

After only a year since its commercial launch, Dragonica PH bids farewell.

If you ever come across Dragonica PH’s website, all the other content has been blocked out/hidden/restricted except for one thing: a painstakingly-long announcement that might not come as a shock to anyone. I figured that after Dragonica KR's early exit, the local server would follow suit.

Below is what I call their formal goodbye without actually answering any question/issue.

Slayers,

It has been more than a year now since we met each other at that quaint port town of Odellia. The early morning sun gleamed gloriously that day, while the breeze blew gently and warmed our sea-parched skins.

We wandered around the town charmed by its dainty houses and fancy brick roads. The townspeople greeted us amiably – the old woman tending her flowers, the guards who stood pat at their ground, the big blue cat with a megaphone, the traders, the blacksmith, that old man by the bridge.

A desperate plea from the town chief to save his daughter from wolves pressed us to action and thus our grand adventure began. With our swords, staves, claws, and bows, we overcame waves of stumps, sheep, and orcs until we reached the enchanted Port of Winds.

It is through our stay in that magical town that we were able to learn more about the great quest that we were about to undertake. It was up to us to stop an all-powerful witch from liberating an ancient evil whose black heart reeks of vengeance and wickedness.

After clearing out the dangers that lurked beneath the Port of Winds, we ventured through the beaches and caves and found ourselves at the fiery gates of Valid Raeth. Together we defeated the Magma Drake Lavalon.

Soon we stormed through the pine tree forest and fought the corrupted wizard Mutisha and his powerful golem Aram. Count Van Cliff and his ghastly pet dragon would later block our path. The perils we faced grew bigger and harder as we journeyed across the barren forests and freezing plains.

We called upon each other for strength to overcome these obstacles, happily sharing the spoils from each victory. Together we found those rare weapons and armors that made us better in carrying out our quest. We laughed at danger, we cried over defeat. We celebrated our triumph and friendship against the odds.

However, just like everything else, all good things must end.

It was decided that Dragonica PH would be merged with Dragonica SEA. This does not mean that your Dragonica adventure will now end. This only signals a new chapter in your journey, as you will meet new friends and face bigger and tougher challenges in your quest to stop the evil dragon Elga from wreaking havoc again.

The Dragonica PH servers will close this Friday, September 16, at 12 noon.

Meanwhile, the Dragonica Migration Page will be up tomorrow, Tuesday, September 13 and will close on September 21. All compensation packages will be the inserted after the DGN Migration Page is closed.

Those who intend to migrate to Dragonica SEA will receive this compensation package:

* 10,000 Cash Point
* 1-hour Exp Potion x10
* Gold Boost Potion x10
* HP Potion (Large)

However, players who wish to have their account migrated to RAN or Cabal will receive the following compensation:

Cabal compensation

* 30D Level Booster
* 30D Blessing Bead Plus
* 30D Traditional German Suit (costume)
* 30D Astral Board X Green
* Life Capsule (Lv 2) Type B [999ea] x5
* MP Potion (Lv 2) [999ea] x5
* 30D Return Core

RAN compensation

* 1D Ultima Rosary (non-drop) x7
* Novice Kit
* 30D Hera Wing Costume (30D)
* Husky Pet
* Advanced Feed (100%) x5
* 30D Pet Costume

The RAN/Cabal compensation packages will be ready on or before October 3. On the other hand, the Dragonica SEA compensation package will be ready by October 9.

Requirements for migration program:

Dragonica SEA compensation

• Must have one (1) Level 50 and above character in either realm (Wyvern and Hydra) as of September 5.
• Must have at least one (1) character in Dragonica SEA server account.
• Choose to which Dragonica SEA server character you want the compensation package be sent to.

RAN/Cabal compensation

• Any account created as of July 11.

Conversion will now be closed and all cash shop items will be reduced to 10 cash.

Slayers, we hope that the friendships forged by our adventure will endure. See you all again as we take on new chapter in our unending quest.

Migrate and have a compensation package? Typical E-games.

Instead of reading the flowery words in Dragonica PH’s goodbye letter, here’s something to think about instead.

This would not have happened had E-Games left Dragonica in the care of IAHGames. There’s a reason why IAHGames’ Dragonica is indicated as the “SEA server.” It covers the whole Southeast Asia, and that includes the Philippines. Dragonica SEA never imposed an IP block for the Philippines when Dragonica PH servers were opened up.

Was there really a need for E-Games to acquire Dragonica? No.

Yes yes, I do sound like I’m antagonizing E-Games. And no, I’m not a Level Up! Games junkie. Both game publishers have their own accolades and failures. I’m just saying that this would’ve been handled better if Dragonica just had the SEA server in the first place.

Anyway, there you have it. Dragonica PH is waving goodbye in a few days.

To Dragonica SEA players, please welcome the PH players with open arms.

The Feel and Taste of Dragonica

Dragonica PH has recently concluded its Alpha Testing and I happened to take part in it. My character did not even reach Level 20, thus I was not able to change its Job Class. However, I still had fun exploring the first few maps and whacking the cute monsters.

Dragonica Online is a 3D side scrolling action adventure game developed by Barunson Interactive and Publishing varies by region and server. Dragonica, like all side scroller MMOs, has been compared to Maple Story and type casted as a Maple Story wannabe. It’s quite the contrary, with strong graphic demand, focus on high intensity combat, colorful, interactive environments with quirky animated backgrounds and various interfaces and innovations to the otherwise stagnant 2D MMO franchises. Dragonica, though, is in a league of its own.

Gameplay: 8/10

Combat: It plays much like a two dimensional version of Devil May Cry, with a combo system that gives you bonuses based on how many hits you have landed and each class has a tree full of flashy skills and aerial techniques. Combat is intense, with enemies charging directly at the players, using monster skills and forming large mobs to stack damage on players all at once.

Combat can happen in two places: in the field and on Mission Maps. Field killing in Dragonica has been revised compared to other games of its genre to reward players for training. Each monster killed outside of an instance adds 1 score to the Monster Count. The Monster Count meter has different tiers at 100, 300, 500, 700 and 1000, each giving a treasure chest for that kill amount. These treasure chests reward an item at random based on the character’s level.

Also unlike other 2D games, field kills are not the majority of the leveling experience. Mission Maps, sets of five instances based on party size and level, comprises most of a player’s training. Mission Maps have a set level of monsters and play arcade style, where just as in Double Dragon or any old side-scrolling beat’em up, you are required to defeat all the opponents before continuing to the next map. Since experience in Dragonica is not divided between players in a party and all experience is shared, it is advised to play in a party. There are also Friend Points that are received by monster kills by you or your friends while partied. 1 Friend Point = 1 XP and can be traded in at NPCs in town for a small fee.

Features: (8.4/10 Overall)

Couple System (9/10): Dragonica has a Couple System, which is more beneficial than not. When you sign on, it will inform you of players of the opposite sex in the general area with their level. Couples, like many of the features in this game, aren’t just for show and players in couple are rewarded with an active buff while your significant other is in the party and an item called couple warps, allowing you to teleport to your partner’s location.

Complaint with the Couple System: You can’t turn off the couple notice when you log on or block couple requests.

Cash Shop (8/10): The cash shop is full of useful items which give a varying amount of advantage to the players who buy game cash. It not only includes fashion items and sets, which can be bought permanently, but also misc items and consumables.

Complaint with Cash Shop: Although there isn’t a significant advantage, as in EXP gain rate, when upgrading items, they are at risk of damage or destruction at a certain point and the only way to protect them is with Enchantment Insurance Scrolls, which have to be bought from the cash shop. Players with upgraded gear have better stats, damage and defense than those without. Cash Shop is more beneficial to the competitive.

Upgrading Gear (7/10): Equipment in Dragonica can be upgraded by either refining or enchanting it. Refining can be performed at the blacksmith NPC and uses consumable items called Armor/Weapon Enchancement Powder. Refining increases the defense or attack of an item. Enchanting, also known as increasing soul force, uses souls you receive by breaking down spare items in your inventory. Depending on the soul force of an item and rank increasing it to, the soul cost changes and the stat bonus gets better. Both cost gold and both can destroy an item without Insurance scrolls.

Complaint with Upgrading Gear: See Cash Shop above.

Guilds (10/10): Guilds in Dragonica are much more than a name above a player’s head. Guilds, besides being a status symbol, provide otherwise unavailable quests which award experience, gold and guild points to level the guild. They have three different levels, each allowing a new maximum amount of players and guild skills can be purchased, giving players who belong to high leveled guilds a distinct advantage. There are also guild wars called Emporia Wars, which allow for 30v30 PvP battle.

Complaint about Guilds: None.

PvP (8/10): Dragonica also distinguishes itself from other 2D MMOs by incorporating PvP. Unlike La Tale though, which has also done this, PvP is room based and players are allowed to set the rules of the match, change the map in which the battles will occur and manage which players are allowed in the room and will participate in the match. Currently, PvP has three modes: Elimination, Death Match and Free For All. Elimination is Round Based, and when a player is killed, they sit out of the match until their team is defeated and the next round starts. Best of 10 rounds wins. Death Match is a 3 minute minimum 1 round game where the most kills wins. Players respawn as soon as they are defeated until the match is over. Free For All is a version of Death Match, without the team aspect. Level difference and gear make a huge difference in PvP and it can be more about who is stronger experience-wise than who is more skilled.

Complaints with PvP: PvP in Dragonica is extremely glitchy. Air combos are a major part of most classes fighting styles, but when a player is downed, it appears as if they have moved to a different spot, then appear back at the location where they were downed. Also, there have been glitches where after a player is hit, it appears as if they have no health and the health display will be glitched. There have been instances in which players have noted that they will go in slow motion as if they have been killed, but will be able to continue moving, although they will become invisible to their opponent and not able to hit them. It’s also possible to log out in the middle of a match and forfeit at the expense of experience, as if you had died in combat.

Graphics: 9/10

In Dragonica, there are auras, particle effects, flashy skills and interactive backgrounds galore. There isn’t a lack of visual beauty anywhere the player travels and the environments become more intricate as you level and explore. There is so much going on, the fine details and intricacies of the environments can be missed if you don’t stop to take a moment and watch what’s going on in the landscape. It’s hard, if possible to ask much more from a 3D game.

Sound: 6/10

The sound in Dragonica can become extremely annoying after an extended period of gameplay. The soundtrack doesn’t change between mission maps until you reach the boss and the theme outside in the field is short and loops over and over without pause, making the entire feel of the game seem to drag on. Along with this, the sound effects for skills, especially with critical hits, can be downright frustrating. I’ve found myself turning off my sound and just watching the action happen.

Class System and Character Creation: 7.5/10

Dragonica is just as clear cut as any other MMORPG with its class system. There are Archers and Magicians which "pew pew" and there are Thieves and Warriors which "woosh woosh". What sets Dragonica apart from other 2D MMOs is that it has an additional path for each class and there is a noticeable class balance. It would have been rated 10/10 if it weren’t for certain issues in the community with classism. Certain classes, although balanced, like the Assassin and Knight are considered PvP classes and because their lack of AoE attacks, get kicked from parties more likely than not. Non-DPS classes are not appreciated by most of the community which makes them rarer and even harder to play. Character Creation offers many different hair styles and unique eye and hair colors. Players can’t change their skin color though and all start with the same beginner’s uniform.

Non-Combat Features: 2/10

Dragonica currently doesn’t offer anything to do besides level and PvP. There is cooking and crafting, but crafting only helps improve gear and cooking materials have to be obtained by killing monsters. If you don’t feel like fighting every time you sign on, Dragonica is not for you. Ironically for the Priest, this support class is one of the fastest DPS dealing classes. The reason this score isn’t an outright 0/10 is because there are many places to sit and chat in town and with friends who will supply you with materials. You can just support other players with food and by merchanting. Dragonica could use some mini-games to give players an alternative to combat.

Summary:

Dragonica is a lot of fun and extremely competitive and fast paced. In the scheme of 3D gaming, it is a big, gulping breath of fresh air. It does have its faults though and if you are not one who likes fighting all the time, Dragonica doesn’t offer you any other options. If you are a fan of side-scrolling 3D action, PvP fighting and competitiveness, Dragonica is right up your gaming alley.

Gameplay: 8/10
Features: 8.4/10
Graphics: 9/10
Sound: 6/10
Class System and Character Creation: 7.5/10
Noncombat Features: 2/10
Final Score: 6.8

Dragonica: Job Classes

Dragonica is a mmorpg that follows the cute avatars/characters formula used by other more recent mmorpgs.

WARRIOR

Warriors only seek for strength for themselves. They might seem to be daredevils because of their strong desire of power but they are gifted with strong body and sharp combat sense. They are brave adventurers who know how to make good uses of their talents and gears in adventures. When the world is in danger, Warriors willingly throw themselves into the jeopardy of war to save their world. Warriors are fully prepared for the journey to prove their strength to the world. Their extraordinary melee talents in both attack and defense make themselves ideal vanguard in all battles.

When certain conditions are met, Warriors can grow into Fighters with maximized attack power or Knights with exceptional defense power.

Knight

One of superior classes of Warrior, Knights are the ones who have grown up from the great adventurers. Knights have put more importance on the advantages of war gears in addition to their physical strength. Intensified weapons and armors have given them more balanced status. Satisfied with the benefits of their gears, Knights always seek for greater combat gears rather than training their strength. Knights fight with their honor to save the world. With the maximized defense power which is obtained by using shields, Knights show outstanding ability in escort mission or defensive battle.

Gladiator

There are others who contantly make efforts to improve physical body strength rather than to depend on combat gears. They have firm belief in that gears can be lost or gone but their body can never be. They have extremely strong body, and they pour out their immense power through heavy weapons. Through their enormous physical strength and tough body, Fighters do not hesitate a second to save their endangered continent. Fighters are the best at charging their energy and concentrating the power on a single assault.

MAGICIAN

It is such a intense and difficult path to be isolated from the world to study sorcery. However, Magicians are ones who love magic even more than anything. Thus, they can overcome all the hardships they encounter in the magic tower. Even though they are only apprentice magicians yet, they are more wise and reasonable than anyone in the real world. They have entered the magic tower to study sorcery to establish a new principle of sorcery. However, the crisis that has come to their continent did not let them to focus on their study. They have realized that to finish their study, they must drive away the crisis of the world. They did not hesitate to barge into the war knowing that there is solid difference between learning from study and learning from the battle.

When certain conditions are met, Magicians can grow into Mages, the master of general Mage, or Battle Mage, the master of assault sorcery.

Acolyte

A superior class of Magician, Mages were reborn as sorcerers with more proficient sorcery skills. They have gained a whole new level of knowledge by combining what they have learned from study and battle. That knowledge has played a significant role in boosting their sorcery and academic value. They wanted to be put into more advanced battles for the pursuit of higher understanding and to build the foundation of such progress. They wanted to be called as Mages for their honor and hope. The crisis of the continent has finally brought the possibility to the creation of sorcerers with whole new level of power.

Wizard

A superior class of Magician, Warlocks have fought in countless battles. While Mages have become what they are by combining lessons they got from the battles with their academic knowledge, Warlocks, on the other hand, have received the lessons they got from the battles exactly as they are and sublimated them into higher level. Warlocks trained themselves to have strong physical strength like Warriors do. At the same time, they have imbued magic power into their body to become even more stronger without any fear. Finally, they have succeeded in creating a new combat style based on the reinforced bodies of theirs. They are no longer considered or called as magicians. They have formed a whole new combat group in the name of Warlock, and have been reborn as advanced combatants armed with versatile combat capability.

ARCHER

Long range firing weapon, which requires much preparation time, has been said to be the greatest and most complicated weapon. Among all the long range weapons, bow is especially notorious for that it is the hardest one to control. Archers are the ones who have struggled with bows to be the true masters of them. It is even incredible to see that Archers are not only efficient in long range battle but also semi-efficient in close range battle. They are very proficient in swift hit-and-run strategy. They tackle the enemy with guerrilla tactics and save allies' time to prepare. As the crisis endangered the continent, they grabbed their bows to fight the war to save the world. Their participation is playing a significant role in wiping out the monsters and defending against them.

When certain conditions are met, Archers can grow into Hunters, bow experts and Rangers, Crossbow experts.

Hunter

A superior class of Archer, Hunter is the most representing job which can be practiced with bow. They are very good at tracking animals' trace and using traps. They are experts in using bows who can shoot their target from any angle. Hunters can double their power by summoning animals they captured by training the animals. They have been receiving respect for their strong bodies and amazing bow skills. Upon the crisis of the world, Hunters volunteered to join the army. They have upgraded their marksman through cross-firing skill, and marched forward over countless victories in battle.

Ranger

A superior class of Archer, Ranger is so called the master of mountain battle. Rangers are the special forces who travel in steep geography in rapid speed. They use a unique weapon called crossbow. In addition to their powerfully trained body, they use crossbow which is favored by Rangers for its small size and portability. The arrows that they shoot from their crossbow is so strong and fast that it is almost impossible to see. They have developed unique battle styles using crossbow, and it made Rangers the strongest troops of the continent.

THIEF

Thieves used to wander around the dark streets of slums and they were the ones who loved hat they do. However, the crisis of the world would not let them to continue with their comfortable life anymore, and they realized that they have to come forth to resolve the predicament. Thieves have formed an organization called Guild, and it began to prove its ability as information organization. They are so used to ambushing and sneaky attack that they have never fought a straight battle. Especially, Thieves are the special forces who are matchless in urban guerrilla battle. They know about city and the buildings so well and they have mastered the city battle tactics. There are so few ho could capture them in city.

When certain conditions are met, Thieves can grow into Clowns, who use various tactics and skills, and Assassins, who are more specialized in battle.

Jester

A superior class, Clown has a very positive personality and always try to entertain others with various joys. With reasonable way of thinking, they look at every matter in a positive way. They put makeup on their faces and try to take others' sadness by replacing with laughter. As all the difficulties occur due to the crisis of the world, Clowns poured all the sadness that they have been collecting from people to the monsters. Enormous curses, fear, and impact were directly put on the monsters, and Clowns took out the claws that they have used when they were Thieves to conduct surprise attack to the monsters. Their tactics have become even more hilarious and chaotic leading them into continuous victories, and their spirit have become a paragon for many others.

Assassin

As the superior classes of Thieves, Assassins have crawled deeper into the darkness. They are geniuses of infiltration and self-secretion thanks to their ability to assimilate themselves to the darkness. Assassins use poison to attack multiple targets with the least amount of effort. They have chosen to use a wholly different type of weapon called Katar, and the use of it matched with their active and practical characteristics. As their belief, "To live, no action is cowardly," their priority us to survive not to defeat the monsters. Achieving their object despite that is the element that had upgraded their fame and threat.

Game Features:

Dragonica: Cutely Action-Packed!

E-Games recently acquired Dragonica, a 3D side-scrolling platform MMORPG, as it's latest addition to its ever expanding roster of online games.

Imagine a child's dream of dragons and fantasy, of heroes and danger: that is the world of Dragonica Online. A free to play fantasy MMORPG by THQ*Ice, Dragonica Online features 3D side-scrolling action in a bright, whimisical world. Featuring four basic classes (warrior, magician, archer, and thief) which further specialize into advanced classes, Dragonica offers the draw of an action game in a fun fantasy setting.

Dragonica fully utilizes the advantages of 3D Side Scrolling system. Dragonica totally liberates character movements by the Depth & Turn concepts on maps. This characteristic of its map system lets the players to maneuver actions strategically in battle. This completely differentiates Dragonica from existing representing Side Scrolling game, Maple Story which lacks variety of movements on map and strategic action maneuvers. The humor in skill effects frees players from the boring repetitive battles which can be easily found in existing games cliche skill effects. Dragonica will familiarly reach the gamers with the unique, special, and simple elements such as Instance Mission Map, Great Boss Monster Battle, and Warfare PK system.

Gameplay

Controls and Interface

Dragonica Online's default controls primarily use the keyboard. The controls (which use arrow keys for movement and the left hand typing keys for action) can be difficult to get used to at first. Thankfully, you can change the key mapping options if you've no desire to adapt to the defaults.

Outside of adapting to keyboard play, the controls are fairly simple, and the game teaches you basic movement, fighting, and interface use. The interface is very straightforward, and by the time you leave the first area, you'll be confident in controlling your character.

Combat

Since gameplay is keyboard-centric, you'll find both of your hands on the keyboard at all times during combat. Combat is a combination of creative moment and use of skills that attack using ground and air moves to create devastating combinations. Combo attacks are essential, and skills build on each other naturally. For example, the Archer class may use Rising Arrow to knock enemies into the air, and then unleash a massive Antiair Shot to kill enemies while they're caught mid-air.

Although the environment is a 3D Scroller, combat remains limited to attacking left or right; even though you can move diagonally, you can't attack that way. This presents a significant problem, especially in mission boss fights.

Questing

Wherever you progress, you'll find quests to help your progress throughout the levels of the game. However, as you go further in the game, you'll find you're restricted to seven quests at a time - which can be limiting, especially if you hold onto some for group play.

Quests also are often confusing as to where or how to complete them, even if a specific objective is stated. This is likely due to a weak translation.

Soloing and Group Play

Many of Dragonica Online's quests, at least at early levels, can be completed solo. However, you may find yourself forced to group earlier than expected - the difficulty of completing special instanced missions ramps up greatly around level 10. Although it is still possible to complete these missions solo, it may require a great deal of potions and creative combat methods, as many of the bosses are immune to knock-down or knock-up, which many class skills are based on.

Grouping in Dragonica Online offers only the benefit of another extra body to do damage to the boss. There are no multi-class combos, and no tanks or healers, so grouping just adds more people to the DPS race.

Pets, Recipes, and Special Systems

At this date, the pet system is not currently implemented in any version of Dragonica Online except the Chinese version. Recipes are present in the game, however, and allow you to take loot collected from enemies to craft edible consumables which provide short buffs. You can also upgrade your equipment with special dust, or unlock equipment with soul force, obtained from broken down equipment.

Immersion

As mentioned earlier, grouping offers only a small benefit in Dragonica Online - the ability to complete content that is too difficult to solo by adding more damage through another player. There is no compelling reason, otherwise, to seek out groups for Missions or Instances - in fact, many may feel compelled to grind to a higher level and complete the content alone. Guilds, therefore, become more useful for organized player versus player combat.

The storyline of Dragonica Online is as light-hearted as its graphics. The first story of the game has you rescue the mayor's daughter, followed by her dog, from some "bad guy." There is no history to this bad guy, and everyone seems generally happy that you've saved the day once you defeat the second mission. Although the quests help you progress from area to area, there is only a loose relation of side quests to the main story line, if any relation can be found at all.

The world also finds itself to be as silly as its graphics: you may find yourself fixing the town's plumbing by taking the plungers from Plunger Raccoons, for example. All of this steals from any immersion one might find in Dragonica Online's story.

Graphics and Sound

If your first thought upon entering Dragonica Online is that you've gone into diabetic shock, you're not alone. There is no denying that Dragonica Online's graphics can make Free Realms look realistic in comparison, and that surely the game is aimed at little girls who still wear frilly dresses more than one day a week.

Once you settle in to Dragonica, however, you can actually appreciate the graphics. Anime-styled, the graphics are whimisical, even for monsters. Although often silly, such as the cash shop toilet paper bow I'm toting in this screenshot, the detail and color on characters is amazing and sharp.

Audio in the game is nothing outstanding; the background music feels very generic, and interactive sounds such as those used in combat could have been lifted from any side-scrolling arcade game.

Overall Rating

If you love side-scrolling action, then you might fall in love with Dragonica Online. It's easy to play, and relatively fun - definitely less of a grinder than other side-scrolling MMORPGs such as MapleStory. As the game is whimisical, and rated E10+ by the ESRB, it's a great free-to-play game for kids as well.
